postheadericon The Advantages And Drawbacks Of Living In A Doorman Building

by Daniel Stevenson

For some people one of their concerns when looking for an apartment is whether it is in a doorman or non-doorman building. More than opening doors for tenants when they enter the building, doormen serve more practical functions. The question is whether the services they provide are worth the extra payment in rent.

The two benefits that tenants of buildings with doormen swear by are the sense of security and convenience. Acting as sentries by the building's entrance, a doorman will limit the access of non-residents into the building. Visitors are screened before they are allowed to enter.

Another great reason to get a doorman is the services they can complete for you. If you want a cab, they can call you one. If you want a delivery signed, they can do this too. There are many activities that doormen will commonly do to help a resident.

Furthermore, residents can give doormen instructions to let the maintenance workers know about something that needs to be fixed. In summer, a doorman really just provides convenience and flexibility for those who need it most.

The doorman is the eyes and ears of the whole complex and they are usually so in tune with the pulse of the place that they will be able to sense when something is not right. Having someone around like this is perfect for aged residents, or for people who spend a lot of time away from home.

While there are numerous benefits associated with doormen, one must also consider the cost factor. In addition to increased rent, tips are expected - and they are usually much higher during the holiday season.

As well as extra cost, for some, they do not like it that the doorman will be intimate with their comings and goings. Because of their job, doorman often are privy to sensitive information people may not want others to know of- philandering partners, drunken parties and a host of other private details.

Ultimately, when making the decision, you need to work out whether you want someone knowing all these details, whether you can afford it, and whether you need a doorman or not.
